French Bulldog health and care basics (South Africa)
Frenchies are wonderful dogs, but they need careful management in our climate. Here are the essentials:
Heat and breathing risk
French Bulldogs can overheat quickly, especially in hot and humid weather. Avoid hard exercise in midday heat. Use early morning or evening walks, and always provide cool water and shade.
Urgent warning signs: loud breathing at rest, blue/pale gums, collapse, or inability to settle. Contact a vet immediately.
Skin, ears, and folds
Check skin folds regularly. Keep folds clean and dry. If there is redness, smell, discharge, or constant scratching, book a vet check before it worsens.
Weight and joints
Extra weight puts pressure on breathing and joints. Keep portions consistent and avoid frequent high-calorie treats. Ask your vet for a target weight range for your specific dog.

Diet and nutrition
French Bulldogs are prone to food allergies and sensitivities. Choosing the right diet can reduce skin flare-ups, manage weight, and improve breathing. For detailed guidance on safe foods, portion sizes, and allergy management, see our full diet guide.

If you can't keep your Frenchie
It's better to ask for help early than wait for a crisis. We'll assist with a safer, structured surrender process.
